Reinstatement of Fire Damaged Multi-storey Building
A fire in the basement severely damaged the support structure to the 5-storey historic Anstey’s Building and the initial assessment was to demolish the entire building. Through careful planning and sound engineering the building was stabilized, strengthened and refurbished for a fraction of the anticipated replacement cost.

Reinstatement of Flood Damaged Umhlanga Hotel
A severe flood in October flowing 1m deep through the hotel removed the foundations from below 1/3 of the building, eroding a donga and washing the pool and eastern garden down into the sea. Southern Sun management stated that as they were in the process of planning for the construction of “The Pearls” that they would demolish the building, but the hotel manager informed them that the hotel was fully booked for Christmas. We put a team together and through careful planning and “out of the box” thinking we saved the building and reconstructed the pool and garden in time for the Christmas season, giving the Umhlanga Hotel a new lease of life until it was time to construct “The Pearls.”

Eng has 52 years of experience in civil and structural engineering projects covering a wide spectrum of buildings including, residential homes, multi-storey student accommodation, office blocks, warehouses and factories including mini-factory developments, bridges and culverts. We have prepared stormwater management solutions on the unstable Bluff and Umdloti dunes and have resolved stormwater management and slope retention problems in Natal Group Sandstone topography. We have carried out in-depth investigations into structural failures and the establishment of practical remedial methods.
